INTERVIEW

Can you introduce yourself and tell us where you did your internship?

I’m Olatoke Abdulqoyyum Temitope and I’m doing my internship at the General Hospital Ilesa under Osun HMB.

Can you walk us through the processes of the application

All you need to do is visit the Hospital Management Board at the Osun State Secretariat at Abere and get the internship form from the Director of Nursing Services’ office. You get called for an interview after submitting your application which includes the required documents, your CV, and your application letter.

Did you have to apply to different hospitals before you got a spot?

Yes, I did. I didn’t want to put all my eggs in one basket

How was it transitioning from a student nurse to an intern?

It was challenging knowing that I had to make informed decisions myself. I’m now saddled with sole responsibility to charge a ward though under supervision sometimes but I’m now responsible for the license I carry. It was challenging but it was fulfilling.

Did your internship align with your expectations?

Yes, I had an expectation of being independent to some extent and I got that.

Can you describe your first week of internship? How did you feel?

It was challenging, changing from a student nurse to an intern nurse. It was rough but good

What were some of the biggest challenges you faced during your internship?

You have to be able to back up your degree with the appropriate skill set, appropriate knowledge and appropriate stuff in your brain.

How were you treated by senior nurses and doctors and how would you describe the level of supervision and mentorship you received?

The reception was generally good. Supervision is minimal and you have the free will to express yourself.

Were you given enough opportunities to practice key nursing skills?

Yes, hands-on experience was achieved

How has the internship shaped your confidence and skills as a nurse?

I’ve had my hands on procedures I just observed during my student days and now I think I’m well skilled to go out there to practice with my license

What was your most memorable experience during the internship?

Bringing forth new lives into the world in the maternity ward. It’s a great feeling to hear the cry of those babies once they are out of the vagina or through a Cesarean section.

If you could change one thing about the internship program, what would it be?

The application process. No one should face the hassle of securing an internship. It should be automated just like MDCN’s.

What advice would you give to nursing students preparing for their internship?

Trust yourself. Trust the skills you’ve learnt in school. You are just good enough

Do you feel prepared for full-time nursing practice after your internship?

Yes, I think I’m fully prepared. That’s the purpose of the internship. Learning continues though

What mistakes did you make during your internship that you would advise others against?

Learn a skill alongside your nursing skill. It will set you apart.
